Internet of Things (IoT) printers are printers that can be connected directly to the web and programmed to print particular events when they occur in real-time, e.g. storm warnings, calendar notifications, incoming emails, etc. I wrote about network-enabled software solutions for thermal printers in an earlier post. The box in the picture above is a laser cut enclosure for the Adafruit IoT printer. I slightly modified Adafruit’s existing design (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:18319) to suit the needs of my project:
- added 3 holes on the side panel to hold status LEDs. The three LEDs provide feedback about the current status of the IoT printer, i.e. receiving data, printing, connection error. In my IoT printer project, I use the Freerange firmware and hardware setup, check out github.com/freerange/printer/wiki/Making-your-own-printer for more details.
- I didn’t want to go through the extra wiring for installing an external panel jack, so I moved the hole on the back panel for the power adapter to connect directly into the Arduino jack.
- straightened the saw-toothed front panel
- replaced the @-sign holes in the front with a custom engraving
